Thoughts On ‘Dinner For Schmucks’

Rarely when I see previews for upcoming films do I think they look stupid, unless of course they are those Date Movie or Vampires Suck crap-shows. But when I was the trailer for Dinner I was so offended by the stupidity. Then the reviews came in and it completely split the critics, which I loved. Either they thought it was hilarious, or a wretched remake of the beloved French film. I haven’t seen the original but I have seen the remake and I’m with the critics who thought it was hilarious. Shmucks isn’t a dumb movie, it’s not very intelligent and it doesn’t provide any deep insight into our lives or why we’re here on earth, but should it? No. It’s a simple comedy that is ball out hilarious.

Steve Carrell is on a role this summer with Date Night, Despicable Me and now Dinner For Shmucks (oh my god they all start with D’s!). He completely owns this movie, his character is so hilariously stupid yet loveable. Paul Rudd, the most underrated actor out there, delivers yet another strong showing for his resuming. Then there is the seemingly ubiquitous Zack Galifianakis who is good, but doesn’t steal the show like I thought he would’ve. Again, this is entirely Steve Carrell’s movie and I wouldn’t have it any other way. The movie is ridiculous, there are so many scenes I cringed and was shocked and awed and I thought I had seen everything, but it goes there with this movie. It’s not raunchy, but comedy wise it’s dirty. My favorite scene is the napkin scene; one of the funniest scenes of all year. The movie concludes with the dinner for the schmucks and it is outrageous as can be.
